My girlfriend has often stated a desire for a husband with leadership/head-of-household qualities as described in Ephesians chapter 5. I have no idea what this means in day to day life and have never seen a recurring example. It seems beyond my ability. So what could I do to develop in this area? Thanks and God Bless. ~AS
Dear AS:

This is of course a wonderful thing your girlfriend is seeking. You should be a strong, spiritual leader in the vocation of husband. How does this come about?

1. Regular Church attendance is a must. Not only because of Scriptural learning but because of the centrality of the Word and Sacraments in the life of all Christians.

2. Sunday School / Weekly Bible Studies: Hopefully this is happening in your congregation. It is important for the Pastor to offer opportunities to further the existing Catechesis of all the members by personally teaching classes designed to help the congregation better-understand the Scriptures and the Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

3. Home devotions: It’s good to choose a personal devotion (Portals of Prayer, Higher Things Devotions, etc…) that can give you some insight as well.

Granted that’s the education side of Ephesians 5. When Christ says “Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the Church” we see that the life of a husband is one of great love and sacrifice. A marriage (as St. Paul says) is a picture of Christ for His Church. A husband who is a good spiritual leader, also understands what it means to be loving, respectful, kind, honest and faithful to the person he has chosen to marry “till death do us part”.

All of these things are a process that is nurtured over time. When (if) you get married, you will not be as good of a Spiritual leader as you will be in 10 years… 20 years… because of this maturing process.

Thank you for writing, I hope this was helpful!

In His service and in yours,
